CUT-THROAT TIME IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP

By Tony Leighton
After yet another roller-coaster weekend in the Championship, next Sunday's final round of matches are set for perhaps the division's most dramatic finale yet as all of the promotion and relegation issues are finally settled.
If West Brom fail to get the Monday night victory over Southampton they need to clinch automatic promotion, it will mean that all but two of Sunday's 12 last day fixtures will have a bearing on the key positions at one end of the table or the other.
Coventry City manager Chris Coleman, whose team are three places above the relegation zone but will still be in danger of dropping into League 1 if Saints take at least a point at West Brom, says: "The Championship is just an incredible division - it's so tight.
"Having managed one of the smaller teams (Fulham) in the Premiership, there are 10 or 12 teams that you play against in that league - especially at home - where you say, 'right, this is where we get our points.'
"But against the top four, a lot's got to happen for you to get the points. They've got to have a bad day and you've got to be at the top of your game. The gap is so big - but the gap is not that big in the Championship.
"You look at the teams in the top six and apart from West Brom - who I think are the best team in the League - and Stoke who are quite physical, there's not that much to be afraid of. And right now everybody seems to be cutting each other's throats.
"At the bottom end of the table, for instance, in the last five or six seasons 49 points have been (in a couple of instances) enough to keep someone in the Championship, but this year 52 or 53 points may not be enough.
"We're on 53 so if Southampton (50) lose at West Brom then because we have a much better goal difference than Southampton (Coventry are currently eight goals better off) a lot would have to go against us for us to go down.
"But in football you never count your chickens, so whether or not the Monday night result goes against us we'll prepare this week to go to Charlton on Sunday looking to get something out of the game because we want to finish the season on a high."
